From the letter in your hand to the questions you take in.

Avanti Medico is being built to start with what the clinic gave you. It will explain the words, show where each explanation comes from, and help you gather what to ask next.

In private testing, and opening more widely once its clinical editorial and safety checks are complete.

Two inks. Carbon for what the clinic wrote; violet for what Avanti Medico adds. You will see the difference on every page.

You came home with a letter from the clinic. It is written for other doctors. Medico shows you the letter again, and writes plain English between its lines.

Each hard word gets its meaning in place. The questions worth asking gather in the margin.

After an appointment, type what you were told while it is fresh. Medico explains the words, never what they mean for you.

Every page says where its words came from, and when they were last checked.

Your diagnosis becomes a simple route, five stations long, and Medico tells you what changed since you last read.

Before the next appointment, keep three questions on one card.

And if someone helps you, you can let them read along, with your permission.

Medico explains. It never diagnoses, and it is not medical advice. Help is always one tap away: nine nine nine, one one one, or the Samaritans.

The film is fetched, and the sound starts, only when you press play.

Five steps Avanti Medico is being built around

When Avanti Medico opens, you will be able to start at any of them.

  1. Bring the letter

You will be able to paste the text of a clinic letter, or photograph the page. A photograph will be read on your device, and only the words sent.

    Letters and results

Photographing a letter will work on Android and on the web. It will not work on iOS at first.

  2. Read it back

The letter is being built to come back as itself, with plain English written between its lines. The questions it raises will be gathered in the margin, ready for you to keep.

Avanti Medico will explain the words. It will not say what they mean for you.

  3. Check where it comes from

Explanations of conditions, medicines and procedures will be drawn from the NHS website. Each page will show its source, the date it was fetched and how fresh it is, so you can open the original. No condition pages are published yet.

    Editorial policy and sources

Avanti Medico is independent. It is not part of the NHS and is not endorsed by it.

  4. Find your place

Diagnosis Space is being built as a simple route with five stations. It will say what has changed since you last read, so you can pick up where you left off.

    Living with a diagnosis

Charity helplines are planned for the stage where they help most.

  5. Take three questions in

You will choose up to three questions and they will go onto one rehearsal card, to print or keep on your phone.

You will choose the three. The card will be yours to read from.

The same steps, on screen

These are screens from the app as it stands in private testing, with example data.

Step 2. In private testing, the margin holds the questions the letter raises, and each can be kept for the appointment.

What Avanti Medico is built to keep the same

Three things will not change from page to page.

  • A source and a date. Avanti Medico is being built so that nothing is explained without saying where it came from.
  • Emergency help on the screen. 999, NHS 111 and Samaritans are on every page, and never behind a paywall.
  • No diagnosis. Avanti Medico is not a symptom checker and it is not medical advice. See what it will and will not do.

It is made to be read at any hour: legible type for everyone, and a calm night theme.

Be first to know when it opens.
